Ranked-choice voting ban passed Indiana Senate
by Staff Report
Indiana Senate Bill 12 passed the full Senate last week by a vote of 38-9. The bill now moves to the House Elections and Apportionment Committee, where it is expected to receive a hearing and could advance in similar fashion. SB 12 received strong support from legislators, residents, and election integrity groups during its Senate committee hearing earlier this month, being voted out of committee 7-2.
The bill’s author, State Senator Blake Doriot, has made his opinions about the convoluted system clear in a video recently released by FGA, calling it "majorly confusing."
If enacted, Indiana would become the first state this year to outlaw RCV and act as the catalyst needed to push states like Ohio and Michigan to advance their ban bills. Legislation to ban RCV is also active in Rhode Island, Hawaii, and North Carolina.
The year is just getting started, and so far, bills banning ranked-choice voting are advancing all over the country. And the campaign to put RCV into the Michigan Constitution this year failed even before the year began. It seems that RCV’s decline is destined to continue.
