RCV banned in Kansas with bipartisan support

by Staff

March has been a momentous month for the Stop RCV movement. Yesterday, Kansas Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly signed Senate Bill 6 into law, making Kansas the 14th state to prohibit ranked-choice voting (RCV) and the third to do so in March.

Jason Snead and Trent England are the co-chairmen of the national Stop Ranked-Choice Voting Coalition. They thanked Gov. Kelly and the Legislature for moving quickly to outlaw RCV.

“I’d like to thank Governor Laura Kelly and the state Legislature for finishing off a great month,” said Trent England. “RCV makes the whole process more difficult and relies on untrustworthy technology, putting a burden on voters and poll workers. Thankfully, an overwhelming majority of Kansas legislators stood up against RCV and for a simple and secure voting process.”

“RCV has a long history of failing voters and complicating elections. That’s why so many states have banned it in the last few years,” said Jason Snead. “I applaud Kansas lawmakers for making Kansas the 14th state to ban ranked-choice voting. Kansas voters deserve free and fair elections where it is easy to vote and hard to cheat."

This action by a Republican legislature and a Democratic governor highlights an often-overlooked theme: the Stop RCV movement is bipartisan. Elected Democratic officials like Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbes and Connecticut Attorney General William Tong have come out against RCV.

By signing Senate Bill 6 into law, Gov. Kelly became the first Democratic governor to do so. As more states continue to outlaw the convoluted scheme, we anticipate that bipartisan opposition will continue to grow.
