DC Democratic Party sues to stop RCV ballot initiative

by Harry Roth

The DC Democratic party filed suit last week in the DC Superior Court to block a ballot initiative that would implement ranked-choice voting in the district. In the lawsuit, they claim the initiative violates both the DC Home Rule Act and the United States Constitution.

This move by the DC Democrats is just the latest in a yearslong battle to keep RCV out of the district. In a previous statement, The party expressed concerns that switching to ranked-choice voting would decrease voter turnout and ultimately undermine democratic principles.

It’s clear that the complexities created by ranked-choice voting are a concern for both major political parties. This lawsuit serves as a reminder that the fight to stop ranked-choice voting is bipartisan and going full steam ahead.
