Montana may protect voters from RCV

by Staff Report

The Montana Legislature may act this session to protect voters from ranked-choice voting. House Bill 598, sponsored by Rep. Lyn Hellegaard and cosponsored by 19 other House members, was approved by the State Administration Committee on February 27, 2023.

The bill would prohibit election processes where voters “rank candidates for an office in order of preference and [ballots are] tabulated in multiple rounds….” This would have the effect of prohibiting RCV in all state and local elections in Montana.

Montana could become the third state, after Florida and Tennessee, to prohibit RCV. Other states are considering similar voter protections.
