The MEGA Act would ban ranked-choice voting in federal elections
by Harry Roth
U.S. Representative Bryan Steil introduced the Make Elections Great Again (MEGA) Act late last week. The bill would ban the use of ranked-choice voting (RCV) in all federal elections, implement voter ID nationwide, ban universal vote by mail, ban ballot harvesting, mandate routine voter roll maintenance, and more.
Our coalition co-chair Jason Snead made the following statement after the MEGA Act was introduced:
“Americans deserve elections that they can trust, which is why advancing election integrity policies is so important for our politics. House Republicans have proven that they are not shying away from the fight to make it easy to vote and hard to cheat. Honest Elections Project Action commends Chairman Steil, the House Administration Committee, and Speaker Johnson for their commitment to enhancing election integrity.”
The Make Elections Great Again Act signals a major shift in American politics. Outlawing ranked-choice voting has become a pillar of the election integrity movement; like voter ID requirements, it is now viewed as a commonsense measure to protect the ballot box.
When we started the Stop RCV Coalition back in 2023, many members of both major parties were uncertain about, or even supportive of, RCV; now, only three years later, you would be hard-pressed to find a prominent Republican official supporting it. And many Democratic elected officials oppose the election scheme as well.
What began as a grassroots effort to educate state legislators and voters about the dangers of RCV has turned into a national movement. And with a longtime critic of ranked-choice voting back in the White House, a bill banning this fraudulent system would likely be signed into law if it passes Congress. For the sake of the American voter, let’s hope it does.
