West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey signs RCV ban into law
by Staff
On Tuesday, West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey signed Senate Bill 490, which prohibits the use of ranked-choice voting in local, state, and federal elections, into law.
Jason Snead and Trent England, co-chairmen of the national Stop Ranked-Choice Voting Coalition, thanked Gov. Morrisey and the state legislature for making West Virginia the thirteenth state to ban RCV.
“West Virginians have grown accustomed to secure elections with timely results. By outlawing ranked-choice voting statewide, the legislature and governor have ensured that voters will continue to get just that.” - Jason Snead, co-chairman of the Stop RCV Coalition and Executive Director of the Honest Elections Project
“In four years, the number of states banning RCV has gone from zero to thirteen. At the same time, voters in blue, purple and red states have rejected RCV ballot measures. I applaud the governor and legislature for standing up for voters and safeguarding elections.” - Trent England, co-chairman of the Stop RCV Coalition and Executive Director of Save Our States
In 2024, six states banned RCV. Now 2025 is shaping up to be as good or perhaps even better for the Stop RCV Coalition and for everyone who cares about simple, trustworthy elections. States are racing to ban the confusing and costly RCV system. We’ll keep you updated on which state decides to ban ranked-choice voting next.
